Instagram overhauls Story sharing: what it means for your strategy

December 2025 marks a major shift on Instagram: the platform now lets you reshare any public Story, even without being mentioned or tagged by the creator. A highly anticipated feature that opens up new opportunities for creators, brands, and businesses looking to maximize their visibility.

At Propulse, we track these changes closely to help you make the most of them. Here's a breakdown of this new feature and its impact on your Instagram strategy.

How does public Story resharing work?

Since December 9, 2025, the principle is simple: when you view a Story posted by a public account, you now see a new "Add to your story" option, alongside the existing sharing options (DM, other apps).

Clicking this option automatically loads the Story into your editor, where you can:

- Resize the content

- Add stickers, GIFs, or text

- Customize the background

- Post it to your own Story

Important point: the original creator is automatically credited, with their username visible and linking back to their profile. So there's no way to claim someone else's content as your own.

What actually changes

For public accounts

If your account is public and you've allowed resharing in your settings, any user can now reshare your Stories. You'll get a notification every time someone does.

For private accounts

Nothing changes: Stories from private accounts still can't be reshared, except by approved followers when you mention them directly.

How to control the sharing of your Stories

Instagram has built in privacy settings for those who don't want their Stories circulating freely:

1. Open Instagram and go to your profile

2. Tap the three lines at the top right, then Settings

3. Go to Privacy, then Story

4. Turn the "Allow sharing to story" option on or off

If this option is off, no one can reshare your Stories, even if your account is public.

Why this feature is strategic for your growth

This update is not trivial. It brings Instagram closer to the resharing systems already found on X, TikTok, or Facebook, and turns every Story into potentially viral content.

For creators and influencers

Your Stories can now be reshared by anyone, which significantly multiplies your organic reach. A follower who likes your content can push it out to their own audience, creating a snowball effect.

For brands and businesses

This feature turns your customers into spontaneous ambassadors. A customer testimonial, a product photo, a review... all of this content can be reshared naturally, boosting your visibility with zero ad spend.

The real benefits

- Extended reach: your Stories can reach far beyond your direct audience

- Stronger credibility: a message shared by a third party always carries more weight than self-promotion

- Content ownership: unlike screenshots, the resharing system automatically credits the creator

- Viral effect: each share can trigger new shares

How to optimize your Stories for resharing

To make the most of this feature, think of your Stories as shareable content:

- Infographics and practical tips: useful content your audience will want to pass along

- Inspiring quotes: messages that resonate and make people want to share them

- Customer testimonials: showcase your customers so they reshare naturally

- Behind-the-scenes content: authentic moments that build connection

- Subtle CTAs: encourage sharing with phrases like "Share if you agree" or "Tag someone who needs to see this"

The goal: create content so relevant or engaging that your audience wants to spread it on its own.

Our expert tips

Allow sharing: unless you have a specific reason not to, turn on the sharing option in your settings. It's a free way to increase your reach.

Create shareable content: ask yourself "Why would someone want to share this?" before posting a Story.

Track your reshares: monitor who's sharing your Stories to identify your best ambassadors and potentially set up collaborations.

Stay authentic: the most shared content is often the most authentic, not the most polished.

This new Instagram feature turns every Story into a growth opportunity. At Propulse, we help you build a full Instagram strategy that takes advantage of all these changes.
